" Piloto:  From Migrant Worker to Jet Pilot "

By Lt. Col. Henry "Hank" Cervantes - born to migrant workers.  PILOTO tells the story of a Mexican-American who as a young stoop laborer in Central California's sweltering farm fields dared to dream a distant and utterly preposterous dream - to be a pilot.

Joined the United States Army and was one of a very few Hispanics to be in the Air Corps.  Through initiative, determination, and more than a little luck, he became one of only a handful of Mexican-Americans to ever serve as a test pilot in the United States Air Force.

Flew B-17s with "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group in Europe from 1944-1945.

Lt. Col. Henry "Hank" Cervantes served as Project Officer for Strategic Air Command's top secret B-58 "Hustler" bomber.  Rretired from the Air Force in 1965 but continued his involvement with aviation, writing the pilot's handbook for Northrop's F-5 Freedom fighter and working in contracting arm of the Department of Defense.  The book serves as inspiration to young and old alike.

Commander Barragan & other UMAVA members met Lt. Col Cervantes at the reception for Lt. Gen Ricardo Sanchez.
